Abstract

Congenital anorectal malformations are rare in puppies and kittens, and anal atresia associated with rectovaginal fistula is one of the most frequently encountered. Its diagnosis is based on clinical findings and physical examination, treatment consists of surgical correction through vaginal reconstruction and the final portion of the rectum. The aim of this study is to report a case of type IV anal atresia associated with a rectovaginal fistula in a one-month-old mixed-breed female canine undergoing corrective anoplasty surgery. The surgical technique used in the patient is reported, as well as the postoperative complications that she developed due to the condition in question, the therapeutic and surgical management instituted. The rapid diagnosis associated with the best choice of treatment, the reconstruction of the anal orifice, proved to be effective and allowed the maintenance of the normal functions of the patient's genitourinary and gastrointestinal tracts, despite the secondary complications developed because it was a surgery in a contaminated region.
