Abstract

Retention of fetal membranes (RFM) is a common condition in cattle, characterized by the failure to expel the placenta within 24 hours after calving. This condition can be either infectious or non-infectious, with negative impacts on the reproductive health and well-being of affected animals. This report describes the case of a Nellore cow treated with acupuncture, combined with prostaglandin F2α. Acupuncture was performed at specific points: Stomach 36 (ST36), Bladder 23 (BL23), and Spleen-Pancreas 6 (SP6). After two acupuncture sessions, combined with the application of prostaglandin F2α, the fetal membranes were completely expelled in a shorter time when compared to traditional methods. The technique proved to be effective, fast, low-cost and non-invasive, avoiding excessive use of medications and associated risks. It may represent a promising alternative for managing RFM, contributing to the reproductive health and productivity of cattle.
