Abstract

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung parenchyma, caused by infectious or non-infectious agents. The diagnosis is based on clinical signs such as coughing, sneezing and dyspnea, radiography, and culture and antibiogram of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). This paper reports the case of a feline, mixed breed, male, one year old, to which the main complaint was dyspnea. An emergency approach was required due to respiratory distress and oxygen saturation of 71%. The patient was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) on mechanical ventilation. The diagnosis of coagulase-negative Staphylococcus pneumonia was confirmed by BAL culture and antibiogram. The animal was hospitalized for four days in which the therapy instituted was with Ceftriaxone 25 mg/kg/TID, Dexamethasone 0.2 mg/kg/TID, Terbutaline 0.01 mg/kg/TID, hydro electrolytic replacement and symptomatic treatment, such as the use of antipyretic and analgesic. Differential diagnoses were made for retroviral diseases, mycoplasmosis and possible associated diseases. After starting the treatment, the patient showed clinical improvement, the mechanical ventilation was taken off and, after stabilization of vital parameters, it was discharged. The quick emergency approach, correct diagnosis and treatment in intensive care was fundamental for the recovery success.
