Abstract

The scope of this review was to address the main aspects of canine pyoderma, emphasizing the importance of the same in the clinical practice of small animals as well as public health. Canine pyoderma is a dermatological condition that is increasingly present in the clinical routine of veterinarians. It is a pyogenic infection of bacterial origin where the agent Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is involved in more than 90% of the cases as a pathogen causing this disorder. The most commonly used diagnostic tools for these cases are the association of clinical signs with cytological findings, and bacterial culture is recommended for confirmation of diagnosis. Regarding the therapeutic protocol to be established, the evaluation of bacterial resistance through sensitivity tests is essential. Another important aspect is the fact that many bacteria causing pyoderma present a zoonotic potential, thus constituting a public health problem, being necessary the dissemination of important information on the control and prophylaxis of this pathology, as well as the training of professionals about the most appropriate therapy for the patients affected.
