Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common diseases in cats, with an estimated prevalence of 1.6 to 20%. The most affected cats are elderly cats, over 12 years of age. It has a progressive nature and irreversibly affects kidney function. There are several factors that can end up predisposing to this disease, such as low water intake and excessive consumption of dry food but, most of the time, it is not possible to establish the origin of the problem. Clinical signs are nonspecific and the diagnosis is made based on clinical history, physical examination and complementary tests, such as blood count, urinalysis, serum biochemistry and ultrasound. CKD treatment aims to control symptoms and improve the animal's quality of life.
