Severe effusive abdominal cryptococcosis in a domestic feline: Case report

Abstract

Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease caused by two species of Cryptococcus: C. neoformans and C. gattii. It affects several animal species, with cats being more prone to it. The disease in cats usually affects the respiratory system, particularly the nasal cavities. Central nervous system involvement is less common compared to dogs. Manifestation in other locations, such as the abdominal cavity, is considered rare. The objective of this work is to report a case of abdominal cryptococcosis in a cat, referred for necroscopic examination. The animal presented progressive weight loss, with a marked increase in abdominal volume, being suspected of feline infectious peritonitis. During necropsy, intense deposition of white gelatinous material was observed in the abdomen. Histopathology revealed inflammation and the presence of yeast-like structures in the tissues, evidenced by Alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff stains, confirming the diagnosis of cryptococcosis. It is concluded that manifestations of abdominal changes must be thoroughly investigated to allow early diagnosis and enable treatment attempts.
