The Transient canine diabetes mellitus in a patient with pyometra: Case report

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most common endocrinopathies in dogs. It is considered a multifactorial syndrome caused by absolute or relative insulin deficiency, and may be linked to different factors such as genetic, hormonal, inflammatory, infectious or even immunological. The present report aims to describe a case of a 10-year-old mongrel dog presenting transient diabetes that progresses to the diestrus phase and a uterine infection as the main factors of insulin resistance. The treatment was carried out with therapeutic ovary-salpingohysterectomy and management of insulin therapy, along with nutritional management via an adjuvant diet for diabetes. After starting treatment, the patient showed improvement and complete remission of the persistent hyperglycemia condition.
