Influence of respiratory disease and diarrhea in the suckling phase on the development of the future cow: Data survey

Abstract

The occurrence of diarrhea and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in female calves results in economic, reproductive and productive impacts. The objective of this work was to analyze the impact of diarrhea and BRD on calf development and future milk production. The work used retrospective data from a dairy farm located in Carambeí (PR). All data collected were from Holstein cows, born between November 2017 and November 2018. The data were in the Dairy Plan C21 - GEA® management software. For evaluation, the calves were separated into four groups, namely: Diarrhea Group - calves with only diarrhea; BRD group – calves with only BRD; Diarrhea + BRD Group – calves with diarrhea and BRD, and Healthy group - disease-free calves. During the study period, 454 heifers were born, the mortality rate during suckling was 9.47%. The Diarrhea group had the highest morbidity rate (P < 0.0001). The ADG showed differences between the Diarrhea + BRD group and the Healthy group (P = 0.001). The animals in the BRD group were 2.35 times more likely to have ADG below 1 kg (P < 0.001). A higher frequency of animals in the Healthy group presented milk production above 14,000 kg in the first lactation (P < 0.0001). Animals with production above 14,000 kg are 3.31 times more likely to have postpartum diseases compared to animals with production below 10,000 kg. The Healthy group had higher milk production in the first lactation (16,410 kg) compared to the Diarrhea (11,860 kg) and DRB (11,263 kg) groups (P = 0.007). With this work, we conclude that diseases in calves during the suckling period have a negative impact on ADG and on the future milk production of lactating cows.
