Abstract

The objective of this article was to evaluate whether commercial propolis is efficient in inhibiting the in vitro bacterial growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella Typhimurium bacteria, with an experimental design consisting of a factorial scheme of 2 (days) x 2 (bacteria) x 4 (commercial propolis brands) x 8 (distribution of commercial propolis on the plates). In the results, we noted the absence of inhibition halos in all petri dishes evaluated out of the four commercial brands of propolis used. This concludes that, for the applied methodology, the result of the experiment was unsatisfactory. However, several other authors have found antimicrobial potential, with the vast majority using crude propolis in different concentrations, making it essential to carry out more in-depth studies.
