Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the progesterone and estradiol fecal metabolites levels during the estrous cycle in sows. Therefore, fecal samples were collected from four adult healthy females 2 x/week during 75 to 200 days. Progesterone and estradiol fecal metabolites were measured by enzyme immunoassay. The estimated estrous cycle length (~21 days) and the progesteronic (~12 days) and no-progesteronic (~8 days) phases corroborated with the literature, showing statistical difference between phases for progesterone fecal metabolites. We observed an absence of synchrony between the progesterone and estradiol metabolites during estrous cycle, associated to differences in steroid metabolism in this species. This study demonstrated the viability in use of fecal samples for the longitudinal monitoring of estrous cycle in swine; however, it is necessary take in count the differences in hormone metabolism on the interpretation of the fecal hormone profile during the estrous cycle.
