Abstract

Yellow fever is an infectious non-contagious disease that can cause acute, febrile and hemorrhagic conditions. The State of São Paulo has experienced an epidemic in the last two years. As Brazil presents an extensive enzootic area for wild yellow fever, knowledge of the main forms of transmission and prophylaxis is fundamental to avoid new epidemics. This study evaluated the population's knowledge about these factors. Although Aedes aegypti has not promoted transmission of the disease in Brazil since 1942, most of the interviewees believe that it is the main vector, however, it is known that vaccination is the best way to prevent the disease.
