Abstract

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis of great social and economic importance and global distribution. An online questionnaire was carried out, in which 1,978 people participated, with the aim of raising and analyzing data based on the knowledge of the Brazilian population on leptospirosis and its main characteristics. The participating population has shown to be informed about the zoonosis and its main forms of transmission and prophylaxis, although the majority denied previous infections or the knowledge of close individuals diagnosed with leptospirosis. However, only small percentages knew in depth certain characteristics of the zoonosis and some individuals stated certain misinformation regarding the disease, having it confused with other diseases such as dengue, rabies, and salmonellosis. Thus, the importance of health education is emphasized to clarify such points. Most individuals declared to have access to basic sanitation, limiting the surveying of data to study the knowledge about leptospirosis on people without this resource. Therefore, research with a greater focus on this portion of the population is recommended.
