Abstract

Renal failure in horses, compared to disorders of the digestive and locomotor systems, is uncommon, but when it can cause severe damage, it is a serious disease that can lead to uremic decompensation and cachexia, leading to death. The condition can have different origins, such as bacterial, drug intoxication and can be secondary to shock. Its course is variable, and it can also develop acutely and evolve into a late condition, characterized by the progressive loss of babies. The objective of this review is to present important aspects of renal function in horses, including the anatomy and physiology of the region, specific aspects of the development of the disease, diagnosis and treatment.
