Abstract

This study aims to analyze the clinical, epidemiological and therapeutic aspects of puerperal hypocalcemia in bitches, following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. Seven articles were selected for detailed analysis after a selection and exclusion process. The main clinical signs of puerperal hypocalcemia in bitches include muscular tetany, epileptic seizures, ataxia and tachypnea. This condition is more prevalent in small dogs in the postpartum period, aged between 3 and 4 years, and in medium to large litters. Different therapeutic approaches were discussed, highlighting the administration of 10% calcium gluconate and the importance of weaning the puppies as a crucial part of the animal's recovery process. The lack of uniformity in clinical and therapeutic aspects compromises the effectiveness of treatment, highlighting the pressing need for more research on the topic.
