A critical care patient consists of one who needs intensive care and requires proper clinical and laboratory monitoring to ensure life. In those patients, there is a life-threatening condition. Intensive care is important to prevent from worsening in order to increase survival rates and remission. Acute kidney injury (AKI) is the syndrome most frequently seen among these patients. The main goal of intensive care is to prevent AKI development in critically ill patients since it can reduce kidney function, decreasing the glomerular filtration rate (GFR), urinary output (UO), urine production and causing renal tubule dysfunction. The major limitation is the early detection of AKI, since traditional tests for renal evaluation have limitations in confirming the syndrome. The use of biomarkers, such as the urinary enzyme gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGTu), has shown promise in its detection. GGTu has been widely studied as it seems to be able to detect damage to the renal tubules and determine AKI. This review aims to correlate renal function and morphology through diagnostic panels in critically ill patients to identify AKI.
