Abstract

An important common hematological finding in veterinary patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in more advanced cases is normocytic, normochromic and non-regenerative anemia, which causes numerous clinical signs, including muscle weakness, lethargy, anorexia and weight loss. Several factors of CKD are known to lead to anemia in animals, including low levels of erythropoietin hormone by washing, reduction of red blood cells as a result of a uremic condition and increased risk of oxidation, nutritional deficiencies from inappropriate use in erythropoiesis (due to anorexia) and mucosal ulcerations that lead to blood loss. The aim of this paper is to report the case of a canine patient diagnosed with chronic kidney disease presenting with normocytic, normochromic and non-regenerative anemia, in which treatment with recombinant human erythropoietin should be chosen, resulting in hematological effects as well as benefits how it improves the quality of life.
