Abstract

Canine babesiosis is one of the most relevant hemoparasitoses affecting dogs, its typical clinical signs being lethargy, anorexia, weight loss, weakness, splenomegaly, hemolytic anemia, and thrombocytopenia. The conventional definitive diagnosis of canine babesiosis is made by identification of the intraerythrocytic protozoan in a blood smear. In the present report, the patient had ascites and cytologic analysis of the drained peritoneal effusion identified Babesia spp.
