Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of follicular diameter at the time of fixed-time artificial insemination on the pregnancy rate of Nellore cows. 225 females were synchronized on D0 with an intravaginal device containing 1g of progesterone, and an intramuscular application of 2.0 mg estradiol benzoate. On D7, 300 IU of equine chorionic gonadotropin and 500µg of cloprostenol sodium were applied. On D8, the intravaginal devices were removed and the bulls were introduced to the females. After 24 hours, on D9, 1.0 mg of estradiol benzoate was administered via the IM route and, 32 hours (D10), before FTAI, the diameter of the largest follicle of all animals was measured by ultrasonography. Pregnancy diagnosis was made 35 days after FTAI with the aid of ultrasonography. Data analysis performed with the aid of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS®) software for Window,s and the follicular diameter means were compared by Student's t test. The pregnancy rate was 58.66%. There was a difference (P ˂ 0.05) when comparing the mean follicular diameter between pregnant females (14.94 mm) and non-pregnant females (9.85 mm). It is concluded that the follicular diameter positively influences the fertility of Nellore cows submitted to synchronization protocol.
