Hemocomponents have been used in equine medicine in cases of emergency, hospitalization in veterinary hospitals, and even in field treatments, saving numerous lives and assisting in the treatment of anemias, hypoproteinemias, failure of passive transfer of immunity, and coagulation disorders. Knowledge about blood transfusion and the use of hemocomponents is of the utmost importance for the veterinarian, it being a process that involves various steps such as donor selection, hemocomponent type selection, blood collection, transfusion reaction monitoring, and blood types. This knowledge provides greater safety in transfusions for both the patient and the veterinarian utilizing them. This literature review gathers the care and indications for different types of hemocomponents that can be used in equine medicine.
