Abstract

The species Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati are gastrointestinal parasites of dogs and cats that have a worldwide distribution and are responsible for the zoonosis known as toxocariasis, which occasionally affects humans. In Brazil, the agent has a wide distribution, mainly affecting children, due to geophagic habits, close contact with animals, and access to places contaminated by feces. There is a need to transfer information to the population since this important zoonotic infection is among the most common worldwide and constitutes a potential health risk. Thus, this review aimed to investigate the predisposing factors, clinical signs, available diagnostic methods, and the prevalence of infection in dogs, cats, canines and wild felids, and man, based on retrospective studies conducted in Brazil.
