Abstract

Lyme disease in dogs is very common, given that the disease is asymptomatic. But it can be avoided with prevention. The symptomatology of the disease in dogs is still nonspecific. Therefore, observing and carrying out routine examinations is essential care for the quality of life of animals. If untreated, relapse may persist and may even lead to death. The diagnosis must be made based on an exhaustive history, rigorous clinical examination, rapid diagnostic tests and slide smears, aiming at identifying the agent. Notification is mandatory because it is a zoonosis. The high variability of spirochetes allows structural changes in the proteins, providing adaptation to host mammals, as well as penetration into various organic structures and weakening of the immune system, contributing to the pathophysiology of the disease.
