Monkeypox is a zoonotic disease from Africa, caused by the monkeypox virus (MPXV), belonging to the Poxviridae family. Initially discovered in 1958, the 2022 outbreak comprises the disease in its largest worldwide distribution since then. The virus enters the organism from the respiratory tract and its transmission can occur by direct contact with infected animal or human hosts. The present article elucidates the MPXV history from an epidemiological point of view, contemplating the origin of the etiologic agent, its transmission mechanisms, pathophysiology, symptomatology, diagnostic tools, treatment, means of control and prevention, as well as the chronology of reported cases of MPXV up until the current epidemic.
