Abstract

Feline sporotrichosis is an increasingly prevalent disease in the veterinary clinical routine, being considered epidemic in several regions of Brazil. The diagnosis is often challenging, and treatment can be frustrating, given the fungal resistance to commonly used drugs. The present work aims to report the case of a stray cat rescued in Guarulhos with an important sporotrichotic lesion on the head, who was taken to a clinic in an upscale neighborhood of São Paulo to receive treatment. The treatment consisted of an itraconazole monotherapy, for an eight-month period. Treatment was successful and, up until the writing of this report, the animal hasn’t had any recurrence of the disease. None of the people involved in the rescue and care of the animal developed lesions, despite the lack of information about the zoonotic aspect of the disease by some, leading to the lack of personal protective equipment when handling the animal. This shows the need for public policies aimed at teaching the population about the main zoonoses, and more effective neutering programs.
