Abstract

Distemper in dogs occurs through contamination by the canine distemper virus, which is cosmopolitan and highly contagious, infecting both dogs and wild carnivores. Infection happens via hosts’ secretions and excretions, and inhalation is the most common form of contamination. It is a multisystemic viral disease, with gastroenteric, respiratory, cardiac and neurological conditions, and can be a gateway for secondary infections. Currently known cardiac disorders secondary to distemper are: alteration of the cardiac conduction system; cardiac arrhythmia; myocardial degeneration; hyaline degeneration; cardiac dilation; sinoatrial node disorder; streaks in cardiac musculature; hemorrhage; hyperemia; left concentric hypertrophy; fatty infiltration; lymphocytic infiltration; myocarditis and mining necrosis. It is necessary to carry on with studies to identify cardiac disorders caused by distemper, as well as develop new studies to discover ways of diagnosing these disorders, so that we can give adequate treatment to distemper survivor patients.
