Abstract

The present work presents a review on dental hypergrowth and malocclusion in rabbits of the species Oryctolagus cuniculus, since dental diseases represent 60% of visits at the rodent and lagomorph clinic and there is an expansion of care in this specialty. The constant growth of rabbit teeth can be hampered by different factors such as an infectious or inflammatory process, metabolic diseases, trauma, teratogenicity or, the most common cause, which is related to food management, when there is not enough fiber intake to perform wear. teeth or erroneous masticatory movements resulting from malocclusion. The diagnosis should be based on anamnesis and clinical history, associated with complementary exams, preferably imaging. Treatment is based on the clinic, and tooth wear or extraction is recommended. In this sense, knowledge about the main causes and determining factors, as well as the clinical evolution and therapeutic approaches of dental hypergrowth is of paramount importance in the prevention and prognosis, and thus, the well-being of these animals.
