Abstract

The piglet soon after birth needs colostrum due to lack of transfer of immunoglobulins (antibodies) via the placenta. He must suck the colostrum as soon as possible, as the absorption of immunoglobulins is limited to the first 24 - 36 hours after delivery, and the fact of being born with only 2% body fat, that is, its energy reserves will last only a few hours. This study aims to analyze the serum immunoglobulin and the weaning weight of piglets following standardized ingestion of colostrum. For that were used 33 female pigs divided into control and treatment group, each group was subdivided into 3 orders of birth, first birth, second to the fourth delivery and greater than or equal to the fifth delivery. After birth the animals in the treatment group were divided into 2 groups, which were rotated every 40 minutes to breastfeed up to 6 hours after birth. Collection was performed blood 6 hours after the end of labor in all piglets, to measure the levels of immunoglobulin made and weighed at weaning (21 days). The data of serum immunoglobulin and body weight at weaning were subjected to analysis of variance by Tukey test. It was concluded that the levels of immunoglobulins and the weaning weight of piglets did not change when we carried out the management of breastfeeding split, but there was a difference in the average weight of piglets at weaning of gilts for the other matrices, theindicating a maternal influence in the definition of weaning weight.
