Abstract

Epiphora is a very common ocular pathology in the small animal practice and can be characterized by a subocular overflow of the preocular lacrimal film that can cause recurrent conjunctivitis, dermatitis, fistulas, and tear staining syndrome. The epiphora can be caused either by congenital anomalies or acquired conditions that lead to a stricture or obstruction in any level of the excretory lacrimal apparatus. The present research project has the objectives of relating the procedures utilized in the different surgical techniques for the treatment of chronic epiphora in companion animals, show the anatomical variations of the lacrimal drainage system in dogs and cats and the description of the contrasted radiographic techniques used for studying the lacrimal apparatus.
