Abstract

The disease known as “Mal das Cadeiras” or “Surra” is a disease widely distributed, responsible for numerous outbreaks with equine deaths in Brazil. Caused by a protozoan of the genus Trypanosoma, species Trypanosoma evansi mainly affects horses, donkeys, cattle, zebu cattle, goats, pigs, dogs, camels, buffalos, capybaras, coatis, tapirs, deer and wild rodents. The hosts are infected by mechanical transmission, which the blood forms are transferred directly from a mammal to another by contaminated fomites vectors or with infected blood. This study aimed to address the epidemiological, clinical, pathological and prophylactic disease of “Mal das Cadeiras”.
