Abstract

The objective of this work was to evaluate different doses of nitrogen and cuts in the dry mass production and other agronomic characteristics of Brachiaria brizantha cv. BRS Piatã, in the second-year production. The experiment was conducted in the experimental area of the Mato Grosso State University, in the municipality of Tangará da Serra. The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with six treatments, which were the different nitrogen doses (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg ha-1 of N) in four replications. Each dose of nitrogen was divided and applied four times, always after each forage cut, with an approximate interval of 28 days between the cuts. Most of the evaluated variables presented a significant difference with the different nitrogen doses and some variables presented a positive linear response in relation to the nitrogen application, indicating that the dose could be higher than 250 kg ha-1 of N. Nitrogen positively influences height of the forage canopy, population density of tillers, number of leaves per tiller, dry mass per tiller, total dry and green mass per hectare, dry mass of leaves and dry mass of stems of B. brizantha cv. BRS Piatã.
