Abstract

Forensic entomology is a discipline that uses insects and other arthropods in criminal investigations, particularly to estimate the postmortem interval (PMI), which is the time between death and the discovery of the body. These organisms, found on decomposing corpses, can also provide valuable information on the moving of the body, the cause and circumstances of death, and can help establish connections with possible suspects. However, there is still a significant lack of specific regional data, especially in tropical countries such as Brazil, and in the field of Veterinary Medicine. This lack of information affects the accuracy of time of death estimates and the detailing of the cause of death in different environments. The aim of this study is to highlight the importance of forensic entomology, showing how the analysis of insects and arthropods can provide crucial data to identify victims and perpetrators, as well as point out cases of negligence in Veterinary Medicine. The main hypothesis is that, with the increase of research and collection of data on cadaveric fauna, it will be possible to develop more accurate methods to estimate the time of death, adapted to local ecosystems. This, in turn, will contribute to more effective criminal investigations and to a better understanding of decomposition patterns, benefiting the judicial system and society as a whole.
