Abstract

The agronomic performance of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu grown in pure stands and in mixtures with five tropical forage legumes (Desmodium ovalifolium CIAT-350, Calopogonium mucunoides, Centrosema pubescens CIAT-438, Pueraria phaseoloides CIAT-9900 and Stylosanthes guianensis cv. Cook), were assessed in cutting experiment carried out at the Experimental Station of Porto Velho, Rondônia. The mixtures were more efficient in dry matter production as compared to the grass alone. The association with P. phaseoloides produced a higher dry matter yield, followed by D. ovalifolium - grassmixture. The grass in association with legumes showed higher crude protein contents and yields than the grass in pure stands. Apparent nitrogen fixation and transference were higher for P. phaseoloides, C. pubescens CIAT-438, C. mucunoides and D. ovalifolium CIAT-350.
