Abstract

Fungal rhinitis in equines is rare, and it is not yet known for sure how the etiopathogenesis of the disease works. Fungi are known for their opportunistic character, and indiscriminate use of corticosteroids, broad-spectrum antibiotics and concomitant diseases are considered risk factors. The objective of this work is to report a case of fungal rhinitis in a 09-year-old Quarter-Horse, treated in the Large Animals Clinical and Surgery Sector of the Federal University of Mato Grosso Veterinary Hospital. The animal presented serous bilateral nasal discharge and ulcerated wounds with fungal plaques in the external nares. Diagnosis was mainly made via rhinoscopy, fungal culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In the rhinoscopy, it was observed that the lesions were located bilaterally in the conchae and nasal septum, extending from the external nares to the middle part of the nasal cavity. The isolated agents were Aspergillus spp, Exophiala spp and Penicillium spp, and the treatment was divided into two stages. The first consisted of the use of a formula containing clotrimazole, miconazole and amphotericin B, used topically for 82 days total. In view of the non-resolution of the condition at 44 days of topical treatment, fluconazole and potassium iodide therapy was added, administered orally for 06 months. After the beginning of the systemic therapy, there was a significant improvement in the lesions, with total resolution of the infection after 07 and a half months of treatment, and only scar tissue was observed in the rhinoscopy. It was concluded that the association of therapies was effective in this case.
