Abstract

One of the main diseases affecting ornamental birds, more specifically parrots, is chlamydiosis, a disease caused by an obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium called Chlamydophila psittaci. This disease is an avian zoonosis that can remain inapparent or cause mild to fatal symptoms in the animal. In humans, the symptoms are similar to those of Influenza, and can progress to severe conditions. Its means of transmission is through the inhalation of contaminated excreta and secretions. In addition, the inapparent form of the disease can remain in the bird's organism for a long period, favoring the contamination of animals and humans. However, when subjected to stressful conditions, the bird may begin to present symptoms of the disease. A problematic factor is the diagnosis, causing the actual number of infections not to be reported, disregarding the risks of the disease.
