Abstract

Arterial thromboembolism in a feline due to restrictive cardiomyopathy: Case report
Abstract. Arterial thromboembolism (ATE) is a syndrome characterized by the formation of thrombi that reach the bloodstream and can end up in small arteries causing a series of complications. Cardiomyopathies that induce an enlargement of the left atrium in cats are the predisposing factor for the occurrence of the syndrome. The diagnosis of ATE is made through clinical signs and complementary tests, especially echocardiograms. Antithrombotic therapy is indicated as the first choice, but the prognosis varies from poor to bad. Analgesia is extremely important in the therapeutic protocol for patients with ATE. Restrictive Cardiomyopathy is an important cardiomyopathy in the feline clinic, in which a low percentage of cats demonstrate clinical signs prior to the thrombotic event or Congestive Heart Failure. The objective of this report is to describe the evolution of a case of arterial thromboembolism resulting from untreated restrictive cardiomyopathy in an eight-year-old spayed female cat weighing 4.9 kg with cyanosis of the pads and bilateral paralysis of the pelvic limbs. After diagnosis, a therapeutic protocol with clopidorgel, rivaroxaban, analgesia and associated symptomatic treatment was instituted. The patient responded favorably to clinical therapy in the first three days and, later, showed clinical worsening, and euthanasia was performed for personal reasons of the tutor and an unfavorable prognosis.
