Abstract

Equine dentistry has become an essential component in maintaining the health and performance of athletic horses, particularly in response to the challenges imposed by modern management practices. In this context, the objective of this study was to describe, based on scientific literature, the importance of preventive dentistry for the physical and athletic performance of these animals. To this end, a qualitative and descriptive literature review was conducted through the analysis of studies related to oral health and athletic performance in horses. The findings indicated that dental disorders, such as excessive enamel points (EEPs), malocclusion, and the presence of wolf teeth, are among the most common oral conditions and are associated with pain, discomfort, and impaired mastication. These conditions compromise masticatory biomechanics, resulting in inefficient feed breakdown and reduced nutrient digestibility, which may lead to weight loss and decreased athletic performance. In addition to their nutritional impacts, oral disorders can cause acute pain and resistance to the use of bits, manifested by behaviors such as bit rejection and asymmetrical movements. Furthermore, preventive practices, including regular dental examinations and the correction of dental irregularities, have been shown to improve masticatory efficiency, enhance nutrient utilization, reduce fecal fiber particle size, and promote weight gain, thereby directly contributing to animal performance and welfare. It was concluded that the implementation of preventive dentistry protocols plays a decisive role in maintaining oral health and optimizing athletic performance by ensuring digestive efficiency and an appropriate response to rider commands. Therefore, integrating these practices into the routine management and training of equine athletes is essential.
