Abstract

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an important reproductive biotechnology applied to cattle production, contributing to genetic improvement and increased reproductive efficiency in herds. The technique consists of fertilizing oocytes from genetically superior cows with semen from previously selected bulls under laboratory conditions, followed by the transfer of the resulting embryos to recipient cows, enabling the birth of calves with high genetic potential. Within the context of Brazilian agribusiness and the increasing demand for high-quality food, IVF has emerged as an alternative capable of overcoming reproductive challenges such as low fertility, postpartum anestrus, and delayed puberty. In this regard, this biotechnology has become a relevant strategy for genetic improvement and for enhancing productivity in cattle herds. The present study aimed to review the main benefits of IVF in cattle and to evaluate the knowledge of veterinary medicine students regarding this technique. The methodology consisted of a literature review and the application of an online questionnaire answered by 102 students from the 8th to the 10th semesters of the Veterinary Medicine program who had completed the course in Biotechnology and Animal Reproduction. The questionnaire included objective questions related to the topic. The results indicated that although most participants understand the concept of the technique and recognize its importance, some students still demonstrate a superficial level of knowledge about IVF. These findings highlight the need for educational strategies that promote deeper understanding of the subject, contributing to better professional training in the field of animal reproduction.
