Abstract

Thoracic trauma may lead to pneumothorax, pulmonary contusions, and hypoxemia, resulting in severe dyspnea and risk of organ failure. This study reports the stabilization of a dog treated at the Veterinary Teaching Clinic of the Federal University of Acre with severe dyspnea after a dog attack that caused extensive penetrating injuries to both thoracic walls. Emergency treatment was initiated following the ABC trauma protocol with oxygen therapy via face mask. Due to persistent respiratory distress, orotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation associated with inhalational anesthesia were performed to allow patient stabilization and surgical preparation. Ventilation was conducted in volume-controlled mode with PEEP adjustment, while lung expansion and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO₂) were monitored by pulse oximetry. In the postoperative period, the patient remained under intensive care and continuous monitoring. Despite clinical and surgical intervention, the patient died, possibly due to systemic complications associated with bite injuries. These findings highlight that dogs with severe dyspnea caused by thoracic trauma require immediate stabilization and ventilatory support, and the prognosis is often guarded.
