Abstract

Congenital anal stenosis is an anomaly that affects cattle, characterized by partial narrowing of the rectal lumen, which compromises normal fecal elimination and leads to progressive abdominal distension in neonates. This malformation results from failures in intestinal recanalization or disturbances in vascular supply during embryogenesis. This condition requires early clinical diagnosis and immediate surgical intervention to ensure the animal’s survival. This study describes the case of a five-day-old Nellore calf that presented abdominal distension and difficulty in fecal elimination since birth. The diagnosis was established through inspection of the perineal region, which revealed an anal opening of reduced diameter, consistent with anal stenosis. The treatment consisted of performing an “X”-shaped incision in the perineal region, followed by tissue dissection to expose the rectum, enlargement of the lumen, and fixation of the rectum to the skin using simple interrupted sutures. Early diagnosis and prompt surgical treatment allow resolution of anal stenosis, which carries a favorable prognosis.
