The objective of this study was to report a case of primary hypothyroidism in an eight-year-old female Border Collie weighing 33 kg, with a history of recurrent dermatitis. Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disorder characterized by deficient production of thyroid hormones. The most common clinical signs include lethargy, weight gain, and cutaneous and coat alterations. The treatment of choice consists of hormone replacement therapy with levothyroxine. A home visit was conducted for the animal in the city of Rio de Janeiro. During the clinical examination, darkening of the facial coat, obesity, hair thinning, facial edema, and the presence of a mass on the upper eyelid of the left eye were observed, raising suspicion of hypothyroidism. To confirm the diagnosis, specific tests were requested to evaluate thyroid hormone levels, which confirmed the clinical suspicion. The animal underwent hormone replacement therapy with levothyroxine and was monitored for reassessment and possible dose adjustment. It was concluded that monitoring hormone levels is crucial for dosage adjustment, and clinical follow-up is equally important. Accurate diagnosis and appropriate medical treatment are essential for a better prognosis of the animal.
