Bacterial infectious endometritis is one of the main conditions responsible for reduced fertility in mares. Repetitive and ineffective treatments can lead to drug resistance, reducing the efficacy of therapies in eliminating pathogens. New therapeutic approaches are being investigated for the treatment of equine endometritis. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a drug with antimicrobial potential (in vitro) that diffuses well into body tissues and is widely used in the treatment of various animal diseases. However, few studies have evaluated its effectiveness in treating uterine infections. This case report describes the use of DMSO in the pre-transfer lavage of an embryo recovered from a mare diagnosed with endometritis. Following the DMSO embryo lavage, no signs of endometritis were observed in the receiving mare. The pregnancy was successfully maintained, resulting in the birth of healthy offspring with no visible malformations. These findings suggest that DMSO may be a promising therapeutic option for embryos derived from mares with bacterial infectious endometritis that are refractory to conventional treatments.
