Abstract

Veterinary forensics has emerged as a critical field at the intersection of veterinary medicine, justice, and public health, providing indispensable technical and scientific support for investigating animal abuse, poisoning, and environmental crimes. International advancements, particularly in the United States and Europe, emphasize the importance of standardized protocols, continuous professional training, and institutional integration to ensure effective forensic investigations. In Brazil, despite recent progress such as the establishment of the Animal Protection and Welfare Program (MAPA, 2019), significant challenges, challenges still remain regarding professional training, specialty recognition, and the establishment of forens the structuring of forensic support centers. The role of the forensic veterinarian is essential, not only for legal accountability, but also for promoting animal welfare, public health surveillance, and preventing domestic violence, positioning the profession as a key agent in implementing the One Health concept. This work highlights the need for institutional strengthening, investment in applied research, and the creation of multidisciplinary networks to consolidate veterinary forensics as an effective tool for justice and public health in Brazil and the world.
