Abstract

The objective of this study was to report a case of non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema associated with an anaphylactic reaction following rabies vaccination in a dog. A female Papillon dog developed a systemic allergic reaction approximately 25 minutes after rabies vaccine administration, characterized by pruritus, eyelid edema, cutaneous hyperemia, dyspnea, tongue cyanosis, and orthopneic posture. Emergency treatment with an antihistamine and corticosteroid was initiated, resulting in initial clinical stabilization. However, the patient subsequently developed acute dyspnea, and bilateral pulmonary edema was diagnosed based on thoracic radiography and pulmonary ultrasound (T-FAST). Oxygen therapy and intensive supportive care were instituted, with progressive clinical improvement. Within 24 hours, normalization of the respiratory pattern and complete clinical stabilization were observed. Post-vaccination anaphylactic reactions may, although rarely, progress to severe respiratory compromise, including non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Early recognition and immediate initiation of emergency therapy are critical for favorable outcomes, highlighting the need for clinical vigilance regarding adverse events associated with vaccination in dogs.
