Abstract

Acupuncture is a practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine widely used in veterinary medicine as a complementary therapy for pain management and the promotion of animal welfare. This study aimed to report the use of acupuncture as a palliative analgesic approach in a canine patient with metastatic oral melanoma. The case describes a 14-year-old female Shih Tzu that was initially diagnosed with oral melanoma in 2021 and underwent surgical excision of the tumor. In 2024, tumor recurrence associated with pulmonary metastasis was diagnosed, and chemotherapy was initiated. As the disease progressed and the oral tumor recurred, the patient developed severe pain and difficulty eating. In March 2025, acupuncture treatment was initiated, initially consisting of weekly sessions and later increased to two sessions per week due to disease progression. Local and systemic acupoints were selected, including ST5, ST6, ST7, SJ17, and SJ21 for facial analgesia and neuromodulation, as well as GV4, BL23, GV20, and GV12 to provide systemic support and improve overall well-being. Following the acupuncture sessions, a significant reduction in pain, increased appetite, and improved patient comfort were observed. However, as the melanoma progressed and the clinical condition deteriorated, euthanasia was performed in August 2025. It was concluded that acupuncture provided an important palliative benefit, contributing to pain control and improving the quality of life of this oncologic patient.
